Thornhill’s unique layout and proximity to Canada’s largest city means that there is always something going on. Regardless of the season or month, a wide range of local events are available that are sure to peak anyone’s interest. Here is a brief overview of some of the more popular events and celebrations in the Thornhill area.
Thornhill Village Cultural Festival
The Thornhill Village Cultural Festival was on September 15th this year. It’s a wonderful place to take the family for food, music, entertainment, old time baking contest, face painting and a petting zoo. My wife and I had a great time.
Canada Day is Thornhill’s largest and most vibrant celebration of the year. It is an entire day of events that ends with live music and fireworks just after sunset. The official celebration and most of the events are at Milne Dam Conservation Park. Make sure to take in the People’s Parade as well as a host of kid’s activities and international food vendors. Canada Day is a Thornhill tradition and a must see event.
Come celebrate the 34th annual Applefest this fall. There are plenty of activities for all ages as well as games, rides and exhibitions. Make sure to try some fresh apple cider and enjoy some of Southern Ontario’s wide variety of apples. Some of the highlights of Applefest include:
- Local food trucks and vendors.
- Little train ride.
- Exhibitions – A history of Thornhill.

There are many different winter festivals to choose from in the Thornhill region. All of them celebrate the spirit of winter and offer a variety of free activities for the entire family. TD Jazz Festival
The TD Jazz festival is an exciting musical event that celebrates professional musicians performing jazz and blues. The event takes place on 3 separate stages on Main Street Unionville. Make sure to support the arts and enjoy the free performances from over 30 of Canada’s best live jazz musicians.
Sounds of Summer
From July until September come out and dance to a diverse range of live music. Every week from 6pm until 11pm join the music stage in Origin Plaza and experience the best of Canadian, African and Caribbean music. The best part about the unique musical experience is that it is a free family event.
Craft Beer and Wine Festival
Make sure to come out and enjoy some of the finest craft beers and wine in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Over 100 wine and beer selections from Ontario and Quebec are available for tasting and for purchase. To help compliment these exciting flavours, there is a wide range of gourmet foods that are available from some of Southern Ontario’s local artisans and best food vendors. If you enjoy craft beer and wine or are just looking for a great evening out then this festival is for you.
Concerts in the Park
Mark your calendars for some free family concerts in various parks in and around Thornhill. These concerts feature some of Canada’s top performers with music ranging from rock to blues to disco and pop. There are six shows in all. Concerts in the Park is a great way to spend an evening and to see some of Thornhill’s beautiful parks.
This award winning market features some of the region’s best organic and local produce. In addition to the amazing local products, the Farmer’s Market offers live music and performers. Join us every Saturday from 8am until 1pm. Come see the excellent selection of locally grown fruits, artisan preserves, baked goods and so much more.
The Markham Fair is one of Canada’s oldest country fairs. Since 1844, the Markham Fair has been showcasing local talents, products and bringing the community of Thornhill together. Today the fair has an attendance of over 60,000 and offers a wide variety of activities and over 3,000 exhibitions. Make sure to be a part of this time honoured tradition.
