Crestwood Springfarm Yorkhill is a nice Jewish neighbourhood, but of course people from a wide range of backgrounds live there and in the other neighbourhoods of Thornhill.

Thornhill is a community in the Regional Municipality of York and is split between the cities of Vaughan and Markham.  This unique community offers an excellent range of services, schools, entertainment options and is quickly becoming a sought after area because of its affordable homes and proximity to Toronto.  To gain a better understanding of the Thornhill area, here is a brief overview of its demographics.

Thornhill is a nice, safe community of good people


The three most spoken languages in Thornhill are:

  • English – 32%
  • Cantonese – 20%
  • Mandarin – 13%

Thornhill has an ethnically diverse population.  The largest visible minority in the community is Chinese comprising almost 11% of the total population.  There are also large numbers of Korean, Iranian and Italian people living in Thornhill. 


According to the latest Canadian Census, Thornhill-Vaughan had a population of 56,361 and Thornhill-Markham had a population of 47,333.  These populations have remained relatively stable over the past five years, but certain neighbourhoods and areas within the Thornhill boundaries are growing at a very fast pace.

Suburbs such as Thornhill Woods in Vaughan is one of the fastest growing communities in all of Canada. Much of the population growth in these new suburbs is being driven from young families moving out of Toronto because of high condo prices and the hope of owning a stand alone home.

Age Distribution

The average and median age in Thornhill is 41 years and the age distribution is as follows:

  • 14 and under – 15 %
  • 15 to 64 – 69 %
  • 64 and over – 16 %

From the demographics of Thornhill and the average age, one can deduce that the great majority of residents are young families and are of working age.  Again, the proximity to Toronto, the short commute and the saturation and exorbitantly priced Toronto condo market are all major attractors for young professionals and families and will continue to be for years to come.


Most of the housing available in Thornhill is single-detached homes (65%).  Over 87% of residents in Thornhill own their own home, while just 13% of residents rent.  These stand-alone homes are very attractive to young families looking to relocate from Toronto.  However, there is also a nice selection of townhouses, apartments and condos that are available and being built in many of the newly developed suburbs, such as Thornhill Woods.

Thornhill – An ever growing community

Certain areas of Thornhill continue to grow at a very quick pace and it remains an attractive community for several reasons.  The many newly developed neighbourhoods in the area offer affordable housing options when compared to the Toronto condo market.  Also, the proximity to Toronto makes the area an attractive place for those willing to commute to and from work.

Combine these housing options with a number of other factors such as excellent schooling and education choices, a multi-cultural community and endless shopping, entertainment and food choices and you can begin to see why the Thornhill area is such a sought after place to call home.
